Abstract

This article examines the social factors influencing fertility choices in Viet Nam from the perspective of population sociology, viewing childbearing as a strategic social behavior. Drawing on an integrated framework consisting of three theoretical perspectives - Rational Choice Theory, Social Status/Role Theory, and Gender Role Theory - the study employs qualitative analysis based on a synthesis of secondary materials, including national statistical data, Vietnamese and international scholarship, and selected policy documents. The findings indicate that fertility choices are influenced by three main sets of mechanisms. Firstly, the value of children has shifted from primarily economic functions to emotional and quality-oriented values, while both direct and opportunity costs of childrearing have increased, weakening incentives for having additional children. Secondly, social status (reflected in educational attainment and living standards) structures parenting expectations and lifestyle strategies, promoting small-family models aimed at maximizing investment in each child and sustaining quality of life. Thirdly, gender inequality in the domestic division of labor heightens women’s double burden and opportunity costs, contributing to delayed childbearing and smaller family size. The article further clarifies the intersections and interactions among these groups of factors within macro-level socio-economic contexts and micro-level socio-cultural norms.
