Các nghiên cứu gần đây tại Việt Nam đã nhấn mạnh tác động của trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực đối với các vấn đề sức khỏe tinh thần ở độ tuổi thanh thiếu niên và đầu trưởng thành. Bên cạnh đó, đã có nhiều nghiên cứu trên thế giới chứng minh vai trò bảo vệ của trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực trước những ảnh hưởng của trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực. Nghiên cứu hiện tại được thực hiện trên 274 khách thể từ 18 - 30 tuổi tại Việt Nam (độ tuổi trung bình = 21,12; độ lệch chuẩn = 3,03) với mục đích kiểm tra mối liên hệ giữa trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực và trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực với nguy cơ trầm cảm, lo âu, stress ở giai đoạn đầu tuổi trưởng thành. Kết quả cho thấy, 88,7% số người tham gia khảo sát từng có ít nhất một trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực và 67,5% số khách thể có từ 8 trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực trở lên. Về sức khỏe tinh thần, tỷ lệ người có dấu hiệu trầm cảm, lo âu và stress đều ở mức cao (lần lượt là: 60,2%; 77,0%; 66,1%). Kết quả phân tích hồi quy chỉ ra rằng trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực và trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực có khả năng dự báo các vấn đề về sức khỏe tinh thần ở đầu tuổi trưởng thành một cách độc lập thay vì tương tác với nhau, trong đó trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực làm tăng nguy cơ trầm cảm, lo âu và stress còn trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực đóng vai trò như yếu tố làm thuyên giảm những nguy cơ này. Từ kết quả đó, nghiên cứu đề xuất nên tập trung thúc đẩy trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tích cực trong môi trường phát triển đầu đời song song với việc ngăn ngừa các trải nghiệm tuổi thơ tiêu cực.
