Hiếu thảo là một khái niệm chứa đựng những ý tưởng quan trọng về cách các con nên đối xử với cha mẹ dựa trên sự quan tâm, tình yêu thương và sự tôn trọng. Khảo sát trên 550 người trưởng thành từ 29 đến 59 tuổi được thực hiện với thang đo Hiếu thảo kép (DFPS) do Yeh và Bedford phát triển nhằm thích ứng thang đo phiên bản tiếng Việt (DFPS-V). Kết quả nghiên cứu xác nhận cấu trúc hai chiều cạnh của thang đo DFPS và chỉ ra tính nhất quán nội tại của hai tiểu thang đo Hiếu thảo tương hỗ và Hiếu thảo độc đoán. Hiếu thảo tương hỗ có điểm cao hơn một cách có ý nghĩa so với hiếu thảo độc đoán. Những người trưởng thành lớn tuổi có điểm hiếu thảo độc đoán cao hơn so với những sinh viên - mẫu nghiên cứu trước đây. Nam giới cũng có quan điểm về hiếu thảo độc đoán cao hơn so với nữ. Phiên bản tiếng Việt của DFPS đã được chứng minh là một thang đo hợp lệ và đáng tin cậy, có thể được sử dụng để đo lường hiếu thảo trong các nghiên cứu sau này.
