Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the role of indigenous ethnic minority women in preserving and promoting traditional cultural values in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, while elucidating the social conditions that shape the performance of this role in the context of contemporary development. Drawing on social role theory and the concept of cultural capital, the study employs a qualitative approach, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with women from the Ede, Mnong, Ba Na, Gia Rai, and Xo Dang ethnic groups in the Central Highlands. The results show that ethnic minority women play a central role in preserving, reproducing, transmitting, and transforming cultural capital into resources for community development; their roles are shaped and sustained through family institutions, communitiy instituions, and local cultural policies. However, the promotion of women's roles continues to be constrained by gender stereotypes, domestic responsbilities, and limited access to resources,... These findings highlight the need to strengthen enabling conditions that support women in participating more effectively in cultural preservation and promotion activities associated with sustainable socio-economic development.
