Adolescents’ coping with domestic violence is understood as their responses to physical, psychological, and economic violence perpetrated by their parents and examined through two categories of coping strategies: emotion-focused coping (internalised and externalised) and problem-focused coping (adaptive and maladaptive). The study was conducted in 2024 using a questionnaire survey of 712 adolescents who had experienced parental violence in Hanoi, Tuyen Quang, Nam Dinh, Da Nang, and Long An. The findings indicate that psychological violence is the most prevalent form of domestic violence. When subjected to violence, adolescents are more likely to adopt adaptive problem-focused coping strategies, whereas maladaptive problem-focused coping strategies are the least frequently employed. Differences in the choice of coping strategies were found accross gender, place of residence, and previous experiences of violence. Female adolescents are more likely than their male counterparts to employ internalised emotion-focused coping strategies. Adolescents living in urban areas tend to use adaptive problem-focused coping strategies more frequently in response to physical violence, maladaptive problem-focused coping strategies more frequently in response to psychological violence, and externalized emotion-focused coping strategies less frequently in response to economic violence. Adolescents who have experienced or witnessed violence are more likely to adopt internalised emotion-focused coping or maladaptive problem-focused coping strategies.
