Abstract

Since its emergence as an official institution in 1977 with the establishment of the Institute of Sociology under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, sociology in Vietnam has constantly developed. Many sociological research and training facilities have been established across the country and have been steadily growing. Over the past 40 years, sociologists have made significant contributions to the achievements of the Doi Moi (Renovation) process, particularly through providing evidence-based arguments for policy- making, directly participating in policy-drafting committees, training and disseminating sociological knowledge to the public. However, in the process of development, sociology in Vietnam has also faced many challenges in terms of research content and in the application of research theories and methods. As Vietnam enters a new phase of development, sociology needs to continue improving in order to better meet the demands of society. From the practice of sociological research and training in Vietnam, the article outlines several issues that require attention in order to further enhance the role of sociology in this new period.
